Cabinet Painting – Please Don’t Make This Mistake

Never put objects on a shelf that has been recently painted as it will tear off the uncured paint.

  • Objects stick to uncured paint and will tear the uncured paint.
  • Dry paint takes 2-4 weeks to cure. Longer in cold weather.
  • Don’t put objects back on freshly painted shelves (cabinets etc) because objects will stick and pull off paint*.
  • This problem is even worse if there is poor paint preparation (not sanded, cleaned).
  • Keep the new paint warm for weeks, and if you have a dehumidifier, run it.

* While curing, it may be ok to put your things on paper towels and move them around frequently to make sure they don’t stick.

Before painting, sand the shelf well, clean it well, then apply a high-bonding primer like Kilz or Bin.
